free guided snowshoe hike tahoe

Tahoe Mountain Sports and Tahoe Institute for Natural Science are excited to sponsor a great day on the snow at Tahoe Meadows. Snowshoe rentals will be discounted to $10 for anyone participating in the hike, and veteran naturalist Will Richardson (Ph.D) will be leading the hike/discussions.

Participants should meet at Tahoe Mountain Sports at 10:30 a.m. If you need rental snowshoes, please arrive at 10:00 a.m. to get pick up your snowshoes and poles. The guided hike is free, but all participants are asked to register. Anyone coming from Incline Village or Reno can meet at the Meadows. Plan for the hike to last around two hours. We won’t hike terribly far; we’ll climb up Chickadee Ridge a ways and see how far we get.

Pigmy Owl TahoeDoctor Will Richardson will lead the hike and discuss natural history issues, namely how various animals and plants cope with the short days, heavy snows and freezing temperatures associated with winter in Tahoe. Will is the Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), a member-supported nonprofit organization seeking to advance the natural history, conservation, and ecosystem knowledge of the Tahoe region.

To register, visit and RSVP for the Guided Snowshoe Hike at Tahoe Meadows; or send an email to with “Snowshoe Hike” in the Subject line

Weather day will be Sunday, March 3, in case we get hit too hard with snow Saturday.

Join us for Drink to That, a pint night on Tues Dec. 13

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Powder days, promises made… what else do you drink to? We hope you’ll drink to local nonprofits at the first night of our “Drink to That” series. The event’s first beneficiary is Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), which works to further natural science research, education and outreach at Lake Tahoe.

Here’s how the night works:

1) You show up on Tuesday, December 13 any time from 5 to 8:30 pm—the sooner the better since pint glasses are limited.

2) You buy an $8 pint glass in which you can fill and refill beer to your heart’s content (all pint glass money goes directly to TINS).

3) You then hang out with you friends, shop for all your holiday gift-giving needs, and test your mettle at a dart throwing competition with prizes from Outdoor Research, Horny Toad, Black Diamond and more.

4) You go home with arms full of holiday gifts, a nice buzz (if you have a DD or can walk home), and a happy heart for supporting such a great cause!

If you haven’t heard about the great things Tahoe Institute for Natural Science is doing, check out the TINS website for more info. With the pint glass proceeds, TINS will be able to continue to fund guided hikes, nature symposiums, school programs, camps, applied research and wildlife monitoring, and will be a step closer in reaching its long-term goal of bringing a world-class interpretive nature center and educational facility to the Tahoe area. We are stoked to drink to that!

We’ll have the store fully stocked for Drink to That to get you through shopping season and all of your winter adventures. Shop avalanche beacons and safety gear, waterproof winter clothes and skis, boots and bindings; special discounts will make the deal even sweeter. We also have stocking stuffers like headlamps, down booties, beanie hats and much more in addition to all the big-ticket ski and snowshoe items that we know everybody wants. Come drink with us for Drink to That!
