First Turns of the 09/10 Season

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

So this storm diddn’t end up being the 2-3ft dump we needed to really kickstart the season, but it did dump 8-12″ on the higher elevations. Just barely enough to get some skiing done. It was only 15 degrees at the trailhead and I was worried I would be cold, but once I got moving I was fine just in a Icebreaker BodyFit 200 base layer, my Mammut Outline as an insulating layer, and a Mammut Ultimate Hoody to keep me dry.  Up at the Mt. Rose summit area there was just enough snow to skin up and find a north facing aspect that had some base before the storm. After that I’ll let the pictures do the talking. Despite a few core shots it was a fun morning and a great way to start the season!

Press Release: Tahoe Mountain Sports Expands Operations

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Kings Beach based outdoor retailer Tahoe Mountain Sports is expanding operations in anticipation of a busy holiday season and the continued growth of their online retail operation. The Lake Tahoe based retailer launched a new website in mid September that features a store blog, learning search, live chat, and other state of the art features. They are also doubling the size of their retail location on North Lake Boulevard in Kings Beach in response to growth in both the online and local sales channels.

Founded in 2003, Tahoe Mountain Sports has continued to grow through the recession and is poised to make an impact in the competitive retail outdoor gear industry. “People are being smarter with their money and shopping around more. This really benefits us because we have a unique combination of knowledgeable staff, great customer service, and competitive prices and we can now serve our customer even better” said Tahoe Mountain Sports’ owner David Polivy.  “The new website has some really great customer service tools, like live chat and The new retail space will give us room to expand both online and here locally in North Lake Tahoe.” he continued.  The new website, has been live since mid September, and the new expanded retail location is scheduled to open mid November.

During winter months, Tahoe Mountain Sports specializes in backcountry ski and snowboard gear, high quality clothing and outerwear, along with accessories for any winter activity you can imagine. Including the Black Diamond Megawatt, what some say is the best of the new breed of rockered powder skis and the hot new VholdR ContourHD 1080p helmet camera that can capture and help you share all your adventures in full 1080p HD video.  During summer, TMS offers everything from tents, sleeping bags, stoves, and backpacks, to rash guards, flip flops, and board shorts. November Snow In Tahoe

Friday, November 13th, 2009

An early season storm rolled through Tahoe yesterday night leaving up to 6 inches of snow close to the sierra crest.  Squaw Valley reported 4-6″ at High Camp, and that is consistent with what I saw at Alpine Meadows.  With cold temps over the next few days this snow should stick around a while on north facing aspects and should provide a base for when that first big storm that everyone is waiting for rolls through. Be patient, it will be time to bust out the beacons, shovels, probes, and a pair of Megawatts soon enough. The pics below were taken at Alpine Meadows on the morning of Nov 12.

VholdR ContourHD 1080p Featured in USA Today!

Monday, November 9th, 2009

The new Vholdr ContourHD 1080p was recently featured in USA Toady, you can check out the article here. The addition of HD quality to the helmet camera market has created a lot of buzz. These great little cameras are still selling out as fast as we can get them, so if you want one for the holidays we recommend placing your order soon.

We haven’t had the 1080p in stock long enough to take one out and get some test footage, but we have been using the regular ContourHD for a few months now and everyone we show the footage to is impressed with the quality. The additional resolution with the 1080p is probably more than most users need, but seeing yourself flying down a mountain in full HD quality is a pretty cool experience.

Tahoe Mountain Biking in November with the Vholdr Contour HD

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Here is the next installment in our Lake Tahoe Mountain Biking video series. Still riding on Novemeber 1st with no snow at all on our route, but the 60 degree temps were super nice! Took off from the Carnelian Bay area with Griffy and rode up to the Tahoe Rim Trail over to Watson Lake and then back down on the Rim trail on the other side. We both use Deuter Race X Air I hydration backpacks and I was wearing my favorite Icebreaker BodyFit 200 Mondo Zip shirt. All the footage was taken with the Vholdr ContourHD helmet camera and I am really starting to like the way it looks when you turn the Vholdr around and take the pics from behind. For those of you waiting on more info on the Vholdr Contour 1080P, keep holding tight as we will be shipping these out weekly for the next couple of months. Also, we will post some video from the 1080P when we have them in.
